The Latest UEFA Nations League Format and Its History

UEFA Nations League was started in 2018, before this there was no such competition. Earlier there used to be friendly matches which were played for practice, there was no trophy in it. Because of this these matches got boring for the players and fans as well. So UEFA decided in 2018 that instead of friendly matches they will start tournament style competition. Which was then named UEFA Nations League. In this all the European teams were gathered and their groups were made (A, B, C, D).

Teams were formed in such a way that teams of the same level were put in one group. And matches started being played with each other in those groups. Home and away matches are played in it.

A total of 55 European national teams are taken in the UEFA Nations League and they are equally divided into 4 different groups as A, B, C, D. Group A consists of the team of top level players and groups are formed according to the level.

Leagues are of this type

League A - Team of Top level players

It has top level teams, which all have strong players. Whose main motive is to win the champion trophy. The league consists of France, Italy, Spain, Germany and Portugal.

League B - Team of Upper middle level players

These are teams of middle level players. Whoever performs best in these teams gets a place in League A. And those whose performance is not good are put in League C or D. Therefore, the primary goal of the League B groups is to gain promotion to League A. Teams like Ukraine, Czech Republic, Austria etc. are included in it.

League C - Team of Lower Mid level players

These are slightly weak or developing teams. Their main motive is to get promoted to League B and avoid relegation to League C. This league includes teams like Greece, Georgia, Kazakhstan etc.

League D - Entry level team

This is the lowest ranked team. It includes teams like San Marino, Liechtenstein, Malta etc. The main objective of the teams of this league is to go to Group C.

Lower leagues get promoted to the upper league if they perform best. In this format, every team in the league has an opportunity to play against teams of the same standing and there is also promotion stepwise. League A teams have an opportunity to play in semifinals and finals.

1. 2019 – Portugal

This marked the inaugural season of the UEFA Nations League, as well as the first finals of the season. Portugal and the Netherlands teams were facing the finals. This game was on June 9, 2019, at Portugal's home stadium, the Estádio do Dragão. Due to which Portugal team got the biggest advantage, a different energy was seen in them. In this final, only one goal by Gonçalo Guedes made Portugal win. They became the inaugural winners of the UEFA Nations League 2019 season. The team was playing a strong game right from the beginning, star players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Bernardo Silva showed very strong game.

2. 2021 – France

This was UEFA's second tournament. The winning team in this was France, who defeated Spain 2 - 1. This match was hosted on 10 October 2021 at San Siro Stadium, Milan (Italy). Spain started the match with a goal, but after that France became alert and their player Karim Benzema scored the equaliser and then Kylian Mbappé, who is France's star player, scored and the team won the game. This was the first win of France in the UEFA Nations League. Once again here in the 2025 semifinals, France and Spain are confronting each other.

3. 2023 – Spain

On the 18th of June, 2023, the third season finale took place at De Kuip Stadium in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Croatia was opposite Spain in this. This match proved to be a bit unique, because in the regular time of 90 minutes, neither of the teams had scored a single goal, so 30 minutes of extra time was given in the match. But even in the extra time, none of the teams could score their goal. That's why the UEFA committee ruled the match as a draw.

Whenever matches are drawn in finals, there is a rule of 'Penalty Shootout' in it. In this, both the teams are given 5 penalty shots each, in this the footballer has to reach the goal with a single kick while avoiding the direct goalkeeper. The team with the highest number of goals wins. During this match, Spain had 5 goals in 5 shots and Croatia was still at 4 goals. Consequently, Spain won this 2023 tournament 5-4.
