Yashin Trophy 2025: Best Male Goalkeeper of the Year

Just like the best footballer is awarded the Ballon d'Or award, similarly international recognition has been kept for the best goalkeeper of the season, which is named Yashin Trophy 2025. This is the best goalkeeper award which is given every year at the Ballon d'Or ceremony, on the same stage, to the player who has been consistent and most impactful for his team and club. The player who plays his role of goalkeeper better, plays good defense for his team, is given this Yashin Trophy. This trophy is specially given to the male goalkeeper of the year, there is no such award for females in this category yet. The Yashin Trophy started from 2019 and the first award was won by Alisson Becker, from where this journey started. This trophy is given in the memory of legendary goalkeeper Lev Yashin. He was a great goalkeeper, who was the only player who won the Ballon d'Or in 1963.

So in today's blog post we are going to talk in detail about the Yashin Trophy 2025 to be held in Paris. This time everyone's eyes are on the goalkeepers performing in Europe's top leagues and international tournaments. So let's shed some light on who is in the nominations this time, and who are the top contenders to win the Best Male Goalkeeper of the Year award.

What is the Yashin Trophy?

As we told you earlier, the concept of Yashin Trophy started in 2019. Before this, the Ballon d'Or was the only award which was going on in football for many decades. But awards were not given on the basis of any specific categories. Only one award was given to the player who performed the best from January to December. Because of this, there was no special recognition for goalkeepers.

But from 2018, awards have started being given in different categories. Which are given on the same stage along with the Ballon D'or. There are separate awards for male players and female players. Similarly, the Yashin Trophy is also a new award which has been going on for the last 6-7 years.

The Yashin Trophy is an award given to goalkeepers. It is in a way the Ballon d'Or for goalkeepers because no bigger award than this exists right now. Because of this award, goalkeepers are now getting worldwide recognition.

The inspiration behind the Yashin Trophy was a Russian legend, Lev Yashin. A goalkeeper who won the world's first Ballon d'Or with his amazing goalkeeping performance. The Ballon d'Or has always been given to the best player but this award has always been given to on-field players, no other goalkeeper in history has received this award except Lev Yashin. His goalkeeping was amazing, it was very sharp and fast, it seemed to the onlookers as if he had 8 hands instead of 2. Because of his reflexes and saves, fans gave him the title of 'Black Spider'.

The criteria for the Yashin Trophy has been kept very clear because in this best goalkeeper award, the goalkeeping performance of the players is looked at very closely. It considers how the goalkeeper performs in domestic leagues, European competitions and international tournaments.

In this too, the best is selected through voting. In which the nominating members include analysts, coaches and former players, due to which the selection process is fair to a great extent. While choosing the best, the focus of the selection jury is on the goalkeeper's saves, clean sheets, consistency, leadership and impact in pressure games. The one who is the best in all these becomes the real deserving of Yashin Trophy i.e. best goalkeeper award.

Why is it linked with the Ballon d'Or?

As we already told you, the Yashin Trophy is completely a part of the Ballon d'Or. Even its announcement is made on the same day when the Ballon d'Or winner is announced. The ceremony and stage are also the same. The only difference is that the Ballon d'Or award is given to the overall best performing player, in which mostly strikers and midfielders dominate, goalkeepers very rarely get a place in the nomination. Hence Yashin Trophy is an award of the same level for male goalkeeper of the year.

There is no big difference between Ballon d'Or and Yashin Trophy, rather both are a global recognition which the whole world watches. Everyone who wins the trophy that evening gets appreciation on Ballon d'Or night in Paris.
